Install the Terminal Server role service to provide secure access to data, applications, and resources on your internal network. Add TS Licensing to install, manage, and monitor CALs. Create a terminal server farm and install TS Session Broker on all servers. Finally, install the TS Gateway and TS Web Access role services to allow access from the Internet via Remote Desktop or a web browser.

When you choose to install Terminal Services, you have the option of installing one, some, or all of the services on Windows Server 2008. We will look at installing each role service individually because in many cases each one requires some configuration during the installation phase.

Install the Terminal Server Role Service

We begin by installing Terminal Server, which is the primary role service and must be installed. All the other role services depend on having Terminal Server in order to work. To install the Terminal Server role service, perform the following steps:

1.
Click Add Roles from within Server Manager.

2.
Read the Things to Note section and make sure all prerequisites have been met. Click Next.

3.
Choose the Terminal Server role service and click Next.

4.
The next screen is the Uninstall/Reinstall Applications for Compatibility screen. If you have applications already installed on this server, they may not function correctly after you install Terminal Server.

5.
Uninstall those applications before installing the Terminal Server role service and then reinstall the applications after your installation of Terminal Server is complete. When you are done doing this, click Next.

6.
Choose Require Network Level Authentication or Do Not Require Network Level Authentication and then click Next.

Note

If you choose Require Network Level Authentication, only clients running a version of Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) version 6.0 and later will be allowed to use this terminal server. Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 is available for download for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 come with RDC 6.0.

7.
Specify the license mode. There are three choices here. The first one is a temporary solution: It allows you to configure the license mode later and gives you a 120-day grace period in which the terminal server will be fully functional. The other two options are per device and per user. The licensing mode chosen here must match the CALs available in your terminal server licensing server. Choose your licensing mode and click Next.

8.
The next screen is the Select User Groups Allowed Access to This Terminal Server screen, and the default group is the Administrators group. Click Add to include other user groups that you want to have access to this terminal server, as shown in Figure1. Click Next.

9.
On the Confirm Installation Selections screen, review all your settings. You can also print, e-mail, or save this configuration information. When you are satisfied that all your selections are correct, click Install.

10.
When the installation is complete, click Close. When you will receive a pop-up message to restart the server, click Yes. After the server has restarted, it finishes its setup of the terminal server. The installation results page lets you know whether terminal server has installed correctly. Click Close.
